Merovingian Lamp Work Repro Ancient Bead

At one point, staying with friends in Normandy, we were asked to make reproductions of Merovingian Beads for them. There was an archeological site nearby, an Abbey, and beads like this were being found. This is one of mine. At the time we made many for the Museum shop and I get guidance these days from a very rare book. I have a lot of fun and sometimes make many of the beads. This bead is very attractive when worn simply. It has that vibe of original Roman glass. The Romans brought glass into England too and left the technology behind as they withdrew. I age the glass by dipping the bead as I make it into Sodium Bicorbonate and water. that breaks down the surface of the glass, ageing it. I can set it simply on a two knot black sliding cord at no extra cost. That's easy..

The Merovingians (/ˌmɛrˈvɪniən/) were a Salian Frankish dynasty that ruled the Franks for nearly 300 years in a region known as Francia in Latin, beginning in the middle of the 5th century. Their territory largely corresponded to ancient Gaul as well as the Roman provinces of Raetia, Germania Superior and the southern part of Germania. The semi legendary Merovech was supposed to have founded the Merovingian dynasty, but it was his famous grandson Clovis I (ruled c.481–511) who united all of Gaul under Merovingian rule.
