African Trade Bead Necklace

For those who know glass bead lamp work, and I am one, these beads are still so marvelous. The cane that had to be made ahead and then cut into chips and pressed into the matrix is not easy to make. Tons of these beads were made in the 16 to 19th Century in Murano Italy, to be carried as ballast in the holds of the great trading ships, particularly those of the East India Company, to be traded mostly in Africa for a large number of different elements to be carried back to Europe. I've set this as a simple necklace on a strong 1mm cotton cord with two sliding knots. Many young people these days like the simplicity of a small art object like this...
